Stephen Tapp & Jason Milne entertain USA visitor Bill Bragman of Yakgear with a kayak fishing session at Sullivan’s Bay, Mahurangi..This session is timed well as they join the North Shore Kayak Fishing Club for their monthly get together. This is a great way to showcase to Bill how we do things here in NZ, the weather turned out perfect and the club had its best turn out yet with some 25+ anglers on the water together.
Bird activity at the very beginning of the journey was a good sign, Stephen & Bill flicked lures among the work ups but no luck so headed to some reef structure where the snapper were around but small and very light on the bite. This is pretty much how the morning rolled out even behind Saddle Island, lots of bird activity, Kahawai & small Kingfish chasing bait fish to the surface but mostly small snapper underneath which were all very light on the bite.
A switch from soft plastics to dead baits saw hook ups on snapper, mostly throw backs but the guys all landed enough to take home for a fed, Bill enjoyed his for lunch. Back at the beach the club were all relaxing over a BBQ and good conversation about the day, although Bill did not get put on to a hard fighting NZ fish, the company, location and the weather sure made for a memorable experience worth reporting to his USA network when he gets home this week. Video highlights from the day coming later this week but for now enjoy these images taken during the day thanks to Paddleguy.
